Post-tension concrete is the premium base for tennis and high-end multi-sport courts — engineered to never crack, settle, or heave. It's what major tournament venues use. We install PT concrete courts across Bergen County for clients who want a base that outlasts the surface, the house, and the next owner. Free quote in 24 hours.
Standard reinforced concrete uses rebar to handle structural loads — but it still cracks under temperature shifts, ground movement, and decades of play. Hairline cracks become visible cracks become drainage issues become resurface jobs. It's the #1 reason 15-year-old courts look 30 years old.
Post-tension concrete eliminates the cracking entirely. Steel cables are threaded through the slab and tensioned after the concrete cures — constantly compressing the slab so cracks have no chance to form. The result is a court base that stays perfectly flat for 25–50+ years. It's expensive up front, and it's the only thing we recommend for tournament-grade tennis.
Post-tension installs are more technical than standard concrete. Here's the 4-step process:
Excavate to spec depth, install drainage, compact and stabilize the subgrade. Critical for PT slabs because they're more rigid — we can't tolerate base settlement.
Steel post-tensioning cables are laid in a grid across the slab area before pouring. Cable spacing and tension spec are engineered for the slab size and load.
Premium concrete is poured around the cables. Standard cure time before tensioning — usually 7 days minimum.
Cables are pulled to specified tension after cure. The slab is now permanently compressed. Final surface (acrylic, VersaCourt tile, etc.) installs on top once tensioning is complete.
Every PT concrete build includes engineered drawings, structural site prep, engineered drainage, the PT slab itself, and your choice of finish surface on top. We can also retrofit existing courts if the structure is salvageable.
PT concrete is the base. The surface you play on goes on top — here are the options:
| Surface | Feel | Lifespan | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| VersaCourt Tile | Cushioned, joint-friendly | 20+ years | Hose & sweep |
| Concrete | Hard, traditional, durable | 25+ years | Periodic seal |
| Asphalt | Tough, cost-effective | 15–20 years | Resurface + seal |
| Acrylic Coating (over concrete or asphalt) | Pro-tour finish, vibrant colors | 8–12 yrs before re-coat | Periodic resurface |
Acrylic on PT concrete is the premium combination — the same setup used at major tournaments. The PT base never cracks, so the acrylic stays smooth for 8–10 years before needing a refresh. VersaCourt tile on PT concrete is the joint-friendly luxury option.
Every style, surface, and layout is fully customizable and can be designed and built for your needs.

"Three different contractors quoted me on a backyard tennis court. Only The Backyard Court Company recommended post-tension concrete — everyone else wanted to install standard slab with rebar. Twenty years from now I'll know they were right. Plays incredible."
"Our court is six years old, gets daily play, and still looks brand new. Zero cracks. Zero settling. Worth every penny of the upgrade."
"Watched the team install our PT cables. These guys know what they're doing. Tension spec, drainage, finishing — all engineered like it should be."
Standard concrete uses passive rebar to handle loads — it still cracks. Post-tension actively compresses the slab via tensioned steel cables, eliminating cracking. Result: a flat, crack-free surface for 25–50+ years.
Cost. PT concrete is roughly 30–50% more than standard reinforced concrete for the base. For most residential basketball or pickleball courts, that premium isn't necessary. For tennis or any court where a perfectly flat playing surface matters, it's worth it.
Total build is typically 6–10 weeks. The slab pour is fast; the cure time before tensioning is the long part.
Yes — acrylic (most popular for tennis), VersaCourt tile (most popular for multi-sport), or even cushioned tournament surfaces. The PT base is just the foundation.
Properly installed PT concrete should not develop structural cracks during its design lifetime (25–50+ years). Surface cracks in the finish acrylic can still happen and are addressed during normal resurfacing.
For most residential basketball — honestly, no. Standard reinforced concrete or asphalt + acrylic is plenty. We recommend PT only when the customer wants the absolute longest-lasting structure or is building a tournament-grade tennis court.
Rarely — retrofitting is usually more expensive than a full replacement. We'll evaluate but in most cases existing concrete courts that have failed are better demolished and re-poured.
